What a Blue Hole Actually Is
A blue hole is a submerged sinkhole — a roughly circular pit, usually in a carbonate platform, that plunges vertically through the seafloor or lagoon bed. They formed during ice ages, when sea levels were much lower and slightly acidic rainwater dissolved the underlying limestone over thousands of years, creating cavities that eventually collapsed into cylindrical shafts. When the ice melted and the sea rose, the holes flooded. What remains is a void that may extend vertically for tens to hundreds of metres, surrounded by relatively shallow reef.
From the air, the contrast is unmistakable: the surrounding reef glows turquoise, and the hole is a near-black circle of deep blue. From the surface, you descend through warm, clear water into a shaft where the walls close in, the light fades, and the temperature drops sharply at the halocline — the boundary where stratified layers of water with different salinity meet. Some blue holes contain hydrogen sulphide layers that are toxic to marine life, producing a dramatic white fog at depth and, below it, perfectly preserved organic material in anoxic conditions.
The Great Blue Hole, Belize
The Great Blue Hole off the coast of Belize is the most photographed of its kind — a UNESCO World Heritage site within the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, approximately 300 metres across and 125 metres deep. The dive is almost universally reached by liveaboard from Belize City, typically as part of a multi-day circuit of the outer atolls including Turneffe and Lighthouse Reef.
The dive itself is not the most biologically rich dive you will do in Belize. The hole is deep — the standard recreational dive targets 40 metres to inspect the stalactites that protrude from the walls — and the visibility in the upper water column, while often exceeding 30 metres, gives way to a gloomy descent into a blue void. What you see at depth are the stalactites themselves, formed when the cave was above water, confirming the geological story. Caribbean reef sharks and bull sharks frequent the upper walls.
Certification requirement is Advanced Open Water minimum, and operators typically enforce depth limits around 40 metres. The current is usually negligible inside the hole, but conditions on the surrounding atoll can be sporty.
Dean's Blue Hole, Bahamas
Dean's Blue Hole on Long Island in the Bahamas is the deepest known blue hole in open water, measured at approximately 202 metres. Unlike the Great Blue Hole, it sits in a sheltered, crescent-shaped bay with a narrow opening to the sea, making it one of the most accessible blue holes for divers and, importantly, for freedivers. The freediving community knows Dean's intimately — multiple world records in disciplines like constant weight and free immersion have been set here.
The water inside the bay is calm almost regardless of conditions outside, the entry is from a beach, and the hole begins at about 20 metres of depth at its rim before dropping vertically. Recreational divers descend the walls to a natural ledge at around 30 metres, where the shaft continues downward into darkness. The blue is intense — the absence of bottom creates a colour that is genuinely disorienting, particularly on your first visit.
Blue Hole, Dahab
The Blue Hole at Dahab on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt has an unenviable reputation. Dozens of divers have died here, most while attempting a deep swim-through called The Arch, which passes through the reef wall at around 52–55 metres. The feature is not beyond the technical capability of an advanced diver with appropriate gas, but many of the fatalities involved recreational divers with inadequate training, narcosis at depth, and poor planning. The site is not inherently more dangerous than other deep dives — the hazard is the specific objective that it tempts people to attempt unprepared.
For divers who stay within recreational depth limits, the Blue Hole is a superb dive. The saddle connecting the hole to open water is at 6 metres, making entry and exit easy. The walls of the hole are encrusted with gorgonian fans and small reef fish. The visibility frequently exceeds 20 metres. Early mornings, before the tourist traffic from Dahab town arrives, the site is genuinely beautiful.
Ras Muhammad and the Lesser-Known Red Sea Sinkholes
Egypt's Sinai coast has several smaller blue holes beyond the famous Dahab site. The Cathedral at Dahab is a cavern rather than a true blue hole but shares the enclosed, vertical character. Further afield, the Blue Hole at Marsa Alam is a gentler, shallower feature with prolific coral growth on its rim. These sites attract less traffic and, for that reason alone, reward the divers willing to venture beyond the most famous postcode.
Blue Holes in the Pacific and Indian Oceans
The Pacific has its own significant examples. Palau's Blue Holes — four connected shafts that merge before opening onto the outer wall of the reef — are among the best dives in Micronesia. Each shaft is roughly 10 metres across and 30 metres deep, and the light effects on the walls during a morning dive are extraordinary. Grouper, jack, and sea turtles pass through regularly.
In Tonga, there are small blue holes accessible by snorkel as well as by scuba. The Vava'u group has several limestone formations with penetrations and chimneys that share the blue hole's character, though they are not classified as true sinkholes in the geological sense.
Diving Blue Holes Safely
The specific hazards of blue hole diving differ from standard reef diving. Depth is the primary concern — the temptation to descend further than planned is real when you are hovering in a void with no visual bottom. Gas management requires more attention than on a shallow reef, because any overhead environment, even a partially enclosed one, removes the option of a direct ascent. Narcosis at depth is not hypothetical.
For dives below 30 metres, nitrox 32 is inadequate — the partial pressure of oxygen becomes excessive. Air or nitrox 27–28 is more appropriate for deeper penetrations. Any diver planning to explore beyond the standard recreational depth at sites like Dahab's Blue Hole should complete at least a PADI Deep Diver specialty or, better, a technical diving introduction course before attempting the site.

Why Divers Return
Blue holes do not offer the biodiversity of a healthy coral garden or the spectacle of a shark feed. What they offer is geometry — a vertical void that exists outside the normal logic of reef diving, a descent into deep blue with no bottom visible, and a silence that is different from the silence of open water. For many divers, the experience is singular enough to justify a long trip. For a few, it becomes an obsession.
